The value of the Forest

Jaguars as initial page

The disappearance of the tropical and subtropical forests is one of the central subjects of the international matters. The battles conducted in Misiones to protect the restant paranaense forest, are hardly sufficient to restrain this loss. The criteria of clearing and substitution of the native forest must be strictly controled.

Although the ozone layer has more press, the progressive disappearance of the tropical and subtropical forests and the consequent loss of biodiversity, degradation of the ground and the water, is one of the biggest ecological problems and than more attention it receives from the international community. Also, it seemed that all whatever becomes is always insufficient.

The creation of the Ministry of Ecology and the profusion of environmental laws in the province in the last three decades, as soon as they have been sufficient in some cases to decelerate, but do not to stop the constant disappearance of the wooded mass of misionera paranaense forest, yet what it implies. The expansion of the agrarian and forest border, without appropriate regulatory parameters, puts in serious danger the physical disappearance of our provincial characteristic more representative: the monte (mount, therefore it is called to the Forest in Missions and other zones of Argentina).

If we limited ourselves to rest on the green evidence of our satelite images, compared with the desert of our neighbors, we will be able not to warn, with one more a more accurate vision, than we are losing the gold by the hole of the package. The misionera forest, as last significant surplus of the paranaense forest, that originally covered an extension with 120 million hectares distributed between the Southeast of Brazil, east of Paraguay and the 3/4 of Misiones, of which it subsists solely as soon as 7 %, represents a tactically important point and high-priority for the conservation.

A jewel is not single that shines, is one diadema of which radiates life. Highest quality of life, because it produces clean water, pure air, landscapes of dream, protection for the animals, incommensurable forms of life, foods and medicines, works as recolector of toxic gases, shades, freshness and humidity and insospechables beauty forms. This wonder, nevertheless, today only represents an inferior wooded cover 40 % of the territory of Misiones, including a surface of approximately 1,700,000 hectares of native forest in critic conservation conditions .

This magnificent green portion in the planet has 92 km of inner border with Argentina and than 1000 km distributed more with Brazil and Paraguay. It is surrounded by two of the greatest rivers of the world, Parana in his west side and Uruguay in the East, is crossed by a number of mountain ranges of low height and green cover, with an incredible profusion of water-bearing river basins, jumps and cascades. In him 58 protected natural areas exist at the moment (national parks, provincial parks, protected landscapes, private and municipal reserves) that represent approximately 540.000 hectares to which next new provincial parks in gestation would be added (Guarambocá and Sierra Morada and the novel Parkway on the coastal route on of the Uruguay River).

If we lose the biological connection among them by the disappearance of the forest and the reconversion with exotic, the richest biodiversity of the Argentine Republic will be lost progressively (of which Misiones hold more than 2,000 species of plants, 1000 species of vertebrates, 560 species of birds - a 50% of the total of Argentina 116 species of mammals, 150 species of reptiles, 70 of amphibians, 230 species of fish and one incalculable amount of insects) beginning by those of greater size between those than one stands out the Jaguar (Panthera Onca) and the Harpía (harpya harpía) that they inhabit the complex biological world that gives sustenance to all the wonderful system.

The described development.

The vertiginous process of substitution of the native forest by the implanted one, must take place, of here in more, with much more preservative criteria since previous "war of the man against the nature" in which to civilize was equivalent to disassemble to cultivate has arrived at intolerable limits and it has become a model of deranged and untenable development.

At the moment the only form to understand the development is the sustainable development. But this is calificated. It is not only tried to extend an agony but to revitalize and to prolong great conditions of biodiversity, the way that allows to the life in all its forms to remain in the Earth in acceptable biological and moral conditions.

It is not a good signal for the Misiones society, nor makes honor to seriousness and the respect due to the institutions of the province, that so with impunity and with the mere economic power, under pretext of investments and generation of use or wealth, advance dangerously in the clearing, without a clear concept of the limits. Nobody already discusses seriously that the operation of the nature has limitations beyond which we put in risk the survival of the human race.

With the present rate of world-wide deforestation, we will remain without native forest became year 2025 and towards 2020 half of the known forms of life will have been extinguished in the planet. What are equivalent to have left us without oxygen, with the rarified atmosphere and intoxicated with carbon, without animals, foods, potable water and medicines.

The development of third generation: that is to say, the knowledge, the technology and the quality of natural life conform the patterns to that we had to adjust and not copying stupids models that squash with macroeconomic numbers that are exhausted in the doubtful euphoria of a generation.

Our responsibilities.

One of estigmas of our contemporary political culture is in exánime defense of our more elevated interests. When it is in game the natural patrimony of the province, that is the legacy to the future missionaries, we must behave so jealously as if it was our personal physical integrity.

The misionera forest is our more characteristic identity, is our more valuable patrimony and the frame of our life and culture.

Our forest is more misionera than the music of Ramon Ayala, than the rapadura, that the mensú, the Iguazú falls or the ruins, because the mount supposes to all these concepts. The principle of identity of Misiones is the forest.

The day that we remain without forest, we will stop being missionaries...

This one is a new and pathetic opportunity to demonstrate if we are to the height of our responsibilities. If we are worthy of the Earth that shelters to us. Or if we have surrendered before the empire of the frivolity without joy.

Now that we have "won" in the fight for the civilization, we noticed that we must continue fighting, but this time to save our overcome, that begins to demonstrate us that we had not made another thing that eliminate the source of our own life and that inadvertently we were also killing we ourself.

The value of the forest is the value of life.
