Roadkill mitigation

Hundreds of animals are run over on the roads of the province of Misiones each month. The increase in tourism, the vehicle fleet and the paving of sections of routes through protected areas or areas of high biodiversity have contributed, but speeding is the main cause.

There may be many circumstances in which a vehicle and an animal meet, but if the first drivez at excessive speed, braking always favors the runover. And here by overspeed we understand that wich does not allow the driver to notice the presence of an animal in its path and activate mechanisms to stop or avoid it without risk (for him or for the animal).

From this point, according to each site we can talk about different speed limits, which are those in which it is considered that the driver can avoid the crash, and beyond them, no longer depend on itself but on several variables beyond their control. These may vary according to the site to be analyzed.

Also, of all threats to wildlife this is precisely the one that is in the hands of the driver, ie, speed bumps, humps, pianos, etc. require that this slow down. Instead, in those places where this infrastructure does not exist, any vehicle can in practice run at the desired speed despite existing regulations, more posters to invite him to not exceed the limits.

To our knowledge, there are only two ways that this be changed:

The driver himself decides to respect the ceilings, which depends on itself according to its criteria, or

Who is sanctioned for exceeding those limits and then we force it to do so (or at least know that you can be penalized if you do).

Given the current critical situation, the second option is the one we consider adequate and, above all, necessary because it is not reasonable to leave in the hands of thousands of people who travel daily by routes through areas of high value for our wildlife, decision to respect or exceed the limits of acceptable speed, being that many of them now choose not to.

That is, speeding is the main cause that we must address today.

If there is excess speed you can not speak of «accident» but of negligence.
